COUNTER newsletter, November 2025
27 November 2025Where has the year gone? Happy Thanksgiving to those of you in the US, and we hope that everyone else is looking forward to December and the end of 2025.
Before we reach that point, there are some big projects coming to fruition. One of our key functions is to ensure that the COUNTER Code of Practice and related tools and guidance continue to address the needs of report consumers, report providers and the wider sector. With that is mind, we’ll be running three consultations over the next couple of months. The first, which opened this week, is a consultation on pathways to compliance for publishers that are not currently COUNTER-compliant. This will be followed by consultations on reporting to multiple institutional identities and, of course, on reporting generative and agentic AI usage. See the news story below for more information about the consultations and our members-only webinar.
As well as the holiday season, November is when we send out renewal invoices for COUNTER membership. Thank you very much to the more than 100 organisations who have already completed their renewals, it’s hugely helpful to have those funds in before year-end. If you aren’t sure whether your organisation is a member, you can check the list at countermetrics.org/members. We’re happy to help you come on board!
Survey reveals high satisfaction with COUNTER
Our latest satisfaction survey has revealed that 89% of respondents are either happy or very happy with what COUNTER is doing. Thank you to everyone who took the time to tell us your thoughts on COUNTER and suggestions for future work.
Consultation: Pathways to Compliance
We know that full COUNTER compliance can be a major technical challenge. Our new Pathway identifies incremental steps that non-compliant publishers could take to make their usage reporting easier to access and more valuable to report consumers. We are now looking for feedback on this consultation.
This is the first of three consultations. Do keep an eye on our website and social media for the other two.
We’re running a series of member-only webinars in January, one for each consultation.
