COUNTER MEMBERSHIP

Our members are the foundation of COUNTER: they help us maintain and develop the standard which provides libraries, publishers and other interested parties with a consistent, comparable method for generating usage statistics.

COUNTER members also support the whole knowledge community by helping us create and deliver educational materials, both on-demand and through webinars, to increase understanding of the Code of Practice.

Member Benefits

We know in the past that COUNTER has not been particularly clear about the benefits of membership, relying on members to maintain their financial support simply because they see value in COUNTER’s existence. We’re working on changing that by clarifying existing membership benefits and developing new benefits to address real needs in our community.

Benefits you already know about:

  • Inclusion in the COUNTER Registry (for publisher and technology provider members who meet the standards in the Code of Practice).
  • Early consultation about potential changes to the Code of Practice.
  • The opportunity to stand for election to our Board of Directors and shape our strategy.
  • Voting rights on the activities that will guide our future, through the AGM.
  • Guidance and support from Tasha, and through her our technical volunteers, for implementing COUNTER.

New benefits introduced in 2024 and 2025:

  • Free registration for your staff for the COUNTER Conference and our member-only webinars. For consortia, this includes up to ten spots at the Conference for people at your member institutions.
  • For consortia and technology providers, the option to have a bespoke webinar for your team or your clients (within the scope of our resourcing).
  • We’ve created a new Advisory Committee open to all members of COUNTER. This will act as a sounding board for potential future developments to the Code of Practice and our best practice guidance, as well as offering a members’ network for exchanging ideas and problem solving.
  • New educational materials. We are regularly asked to go beyond what is available in our existing guides and videos. The COUNTER Academy will be an online-only course taking participants from COUNTER novices through to being able to work confidently with COUNTER API (sushi) harvesting tools and beyond.
