AI metrics consultation, and next steps
19 February 2026If you have not yet responded to the AI metrics consultation, you only have a few more days. The consultation closes on Monday 23 February at 9am GMT. This recent post on The Scholarly Kitchen highlights the complexities of measuring AI usage.
Thank you to everyone who has already contributed to this or our other two current consultations. The consultations on pathways to compliance and reporting to multiple identities have already closed and generated useful responses.
Next steps
Once a consultation is complete, the next step is that Tasha analyses responses and generates a report for the relevant working group. In this report she includes recommendations about how to respond to different points. Raw responses are available as an appendix to the report.
After this, the working group meets to discuss the responses and identify any changes they wish to make to the best practice guidelines. We then aim to create a news piece about the main points in the responses so that the wider community is informed of the process.
We then share updated guidelines with COUNTER’s Exec Committee for formal approval. Once approved we publish the guidelines on our website and publicise through all our usual COUNTER routes.
