Congratulations to our first Academy cohort

18 December 2025

Congratulations to our first COUNTER Academy cohort!

The first COUNTER Academy took place between July and November. Participants worked through eight modules taking them from the basics of what COUNTER is to using COUNTER-compliant usage data to answer real-world questions. 19 people completed all modules and related assignments. This gives our first course a completion rate of 86%.

As a result of the course, participants reported an increase in their confidence in using COUNTER usage metrics.

“I feel much more confident with all aspects of COUNTER now having had the opportunity to work through and understand not only what the data really means but also what’s happening when we generate those reports.”

“It has been great! I feel more confident in using Counter data and will also be better at combining the data with other data sources.”

Positive feedback

Participants also commented positively about the content, format and delivery of the course.

“Easy to follow and to dip in and out of, which has been essential as it’s gotten busier in the term! Having the transcripts with the videos was hugely helpful to be able to return to for notes and each lesson was just about the right length to get across the key information without being too long. The guest speakers and demos added a bit of variety too and it was really interesting to see how such reports might be used in real scenarios.”

“The Academy was exceptionally well designed and highly relevant for today’s library professionals, especially tasked with e-resources management, impact assessments and demonstrating usage/metrics value to key stakeholders. It provided both the theoretical grounding and the practical tools necessary to interpret and use COUNTER metrics effectively.”

Thank you to all the participants on our first course. And thank you very much to our Academy sponsors. Sponsorship from Cambridge University Press supported us in developing the videos and the Academy platform. Scholarly IQ, Thieme and Clarivate sponsorship enabled librarian participants to join the course for free.

We look forward to starting our next COUNTER Academy course at the start of February. In the New Year we will be in touch with those who have already expressed interest in our February and July courses.
