Baking best practices into the Code
03 July 2026We’ve pulled in some of our recent work on best practice guidelines to the Code as part of the fix-and-feature Release 5.1.1. These are new features which are either optional, or backwards-compatible.
Pathway to Compliance
Earlier this year we published our Pathway to Compliance, designed to help smaller publishers offer COUNTER reporting. The steps that non-compliant publishers could take to make their usage reporting easier to access and more valuable to report consumers now show up as an all-new Section 10.5 of R5.1.1. There’s a summary of the Pathway in our Friendly Guide to COUNTER Compliance. We’ll also be leaving the best practice page available on the website for a while, for ease of reference.
Syndicated usage
We’ve added information about syndicated usage reporting, in line with the best practice. That shows up in Sections 3.2 and 6.3. Section 6.3 also now shows that we recommend our syndicated usage guidelines instead of the old Distributed Usage Logging (DUL) project. That’s because DUL is no longer supported.
